ABOUT NECTAR
NECTAR is a landscape design studio and consulting company based in Stowe, Vermont and serving broader New England. We strive to create beautiful, one-of-a-kind, outdoor landscapes that are inspired by nature, natural materials, and ecological processes. We specialize in:
ECOLOGICAL LANDSCAPE DESIGN
We integrate the built landscape with the ecology of a site, using locally sourced materials and designing with a focus on native and locally adapted plant material.
ECOLOGICAL LAKESHORE LANDSCAPING
We develop landscaping solutions for lakefront properties that protect the ecology of the lake, adhere to the standards of the Shoreline Protection Act, and also meeting the recreational and aesthetic needs of the client. We use natural materials and bioengineering techniques to prevent shoreline erosion, reduce phosphorous runoff, and maximize both aquatic and terrestrial wildlife habitat.
POLLINATOR-FRIENDLY LANDSCAPING
We are experts in plant/pollinator interactions and are most passionate about designing cutting-edge, creative, and science-based pollinator-friendly habitats at all scales—from urban backyards to rural agricultural landscapes. We design with plants that maximize nectar and pollen resources for pollinators, and promote landscape maintenance techniques that are compatible with preserving pollinator habitat.
RESTORATION OF NATURAL ECOSYSTEMS
We create/enhance/restore natural processes and plant communities to enhance ecosystem services such as pollinator habitat, wildlife habitat, erosion control, and stormwater treatment.
Annie S. White, PhD, ASLA
Owner and Principal Designer, Annie White, is a native of rural Vermont, and brings both academic training and years of professional experience to her design work. She holds a Master of Science degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Wisconsin—Madison and a PhD in Plant & Soil Science from The University of Vermont. Having lived and worked in a diversity of landscapes and climates spanning from Hawaii to Italy, Annie’s design work is especially respectful of the local culture and natural history. Annie’s previous professional work includes many years in the horticulture and design industries. In addition to traditional landscape design, Annie is experienced with the ecological design of natural stormwater treatment systems and other “green infrastructure,” wetland/stream restorations, native plant community restorations, sustainable landscapes for green building/development projects, and sustainable park planning.
